Learn the best conditions to successfully utilize TRAZER outdoors.
Sunlight considerations:
The high-powered depth-sensing camera relies on specific infrared patterns emitted by the built-in infrared projector and depth sensor to capture information, the infrared light in sunlight can confuse the sensor. In essence, the very technology that makes the camera so powerful is what contributes to its challenges outdoors. While the camera, and most others similar in capability, are designed primarily for indoor use, TRAZER+ has been used extensively outdoors with accommodations to account for lighting conditions and other factors that may impact calibration.
The key to the efficacy of TRAZER is the power/accuracy of the camera, which is dependent on effective calibration. Naturally, as a result of the sensitivity necessary to capture motion accurately, variations in lighting conditions, as well as temperature fluctuations, and surfaces may impact calibration, which can decrease tracking accuracy. Our Team has been successful in deploying TRAZER+ outdoors by ensuring the following:
- Setting the system up under a canopy with enough space to ensure the entire field of play is covered for consistent lighting. A tent with sides is optimal or a canopy that provides enough coverage around the field of play. Such as the example below, a 20’ x 20’ that ensures lighting is consistent in and around the field of play.
- Setting up the system with the sun behind the TRAZER unit.
- Ensuring there are no reflective spots – such as windows, metal doors, or other “shiny” areas that may “distract” the camera. This can also be accomplished by deploying a fully enclosed tent/pop-up with walls, such as the example below.
- Ensuring light is not entering from the sides to cross the camera or create shadows that can disrupt the depth sensor.
In short, for optimal use outdoors, you must use it in a space that allows you to control light for the camera to calibrate and accurately capture movement.
